The South Also Exists/O Sul Também Existe (1985) - Mario Benedetti
One poem a day/um poema por dia #29
Earlier this year, precisely on my New Year’s trip, I travelled to Uruguay for the first time.
It’s beautiful and, though a bit expensive for Latin American standards, definitely worth visiting.
It was there that I found my favorite building among all I've ever had the opportunity to visit: the Legislative Palace (I'm still disappointed with Versailles, it's so excessively decorated it looks tacky).
The Legislative Palace of Uruguay, designed by Vittorio Meano (died before knowing he won the contest held by the Legislative Palace Comission) and Gaetano Moretti (in charge of construction, alterations and adaptations of Meano’s project between 1913-1925) is simply stunnig (link on the captions for bigger size/better quality imagens).
Built in a Greco-Roman eclecticist style, the Palace was constructed with all national materials and elegantly decorated. Sculptors José Belloni and Giannino Castiglioni contributed with multiple pieces for the palace itself and its gardens. I particularly like the stained glass on the Hall of the Lost Steps (unknown/unnamed artist), but there is so much more.
It was also one of the most inviting public building I've ever been to. In addition to being clean and well preserved, despite ongoing renovations (the Palace will be 100 years old on August 25, 2025), you could feel a warm welcome emanating from the employees — guides, doormen, janitors, administrative workers and even security seemed to genuinely love the place.
The trip was also an opportunity to get better acquainted with uruguayan authors, like Mario Benedetti (1920 - 2009), one of the most important latin american writers of the last century. He had a prolific career, publishing more than 80 books — poetry, novels, short stories, essays, plays.
Some of his work was also adapted into song, as it is the case with The South Also Exists (El sur también existe), released in Joan Manuel Serrat 1985 LP and the 1986 collection of poetry Random Questions (Preguntas al azar).
When he died, the Uruguayan government declared a national mourning, ordering his wake to be held with patriotic honors in the Hall of the Lost Steps the following day. Just imagine how badass of an artist one must be to get this kind of treatment. His remains are buried at the National Pantheon in the Central Cemetery of Montevideo.
So here it is, The South Also Exists, translated by Paul Archer:
With its worship of steel
its giant chimneys
its covert wisemen
its siren song
its neon skies
its christmas sales
its cults of god the father
and military epaulettes
with its keys to the kingdom
the north is the one in commandbut here down
below ever-present hunger
rootles through the bitter fruit
of other people's decisions
while time passes
and parades pass
and other things get done
that the north permits
with enduring hope
the south also existswith its preachers
its poisonous gases
its chicago school
its land owners
with their luxury clothes
on a skeleton of poverty
its depleted defences
its defence spend
spent on invasions
the north is the one in commandbut here down
below hidden away
are men and women
who know what to hold onto
making the most of the sun
and also eclipses
setting aside the useless
and using what works
with its age-old faith
the south also existswith its french horn
and its swedish academy
its american sauce
and its english tools
with all its missiles
and its encyclopedias
its star wars
and its lavish malice
with all its accolades
the north is the one in commandbut here down below
close to the roots
is where memory
forgets nothing
and there are people living
and dying doing their utmost
and so between them they achieve
what was believed impossible
to make the whole world know
that the south also exists.
A fome disponível
Colhe o fruto amargo
Do que outros decidem,
Enquanto o tempo passa
E passam os cortejos,
E se fazem outras coisas
Que o norte não proíbe.
Com a sua constante esperança
O sul também existe.
Com os seus predicadores
Os seus gases venenosos
A sua escola de Chicago
Os seus donos da terra
Os seus trapos de luxo
E o seu pobre esqueleto
As suas defesas gastas
A sua gesta invasora
É o norte que ordena
mas aqui em baixo, em baixo
cada um no seu canto
há homens e mulheres
que sabem o que fazer
aproveitando o sol
e também os eclipses
afastando o inútil
e utilizando o que serve
com a sua fé veterana
o sul também existe
com o seu corno francês
e a sua academia sueca
a sua salsa americana
e as suas chaves inglesas
a sua guerra nas estrelas
e a sua sanha opulenta
com todos os seus louros
o norte é que ordena
mas aqui em baixo, abaixo
perto das raízes
é onde a memória
nenhuma recordação omite
e há quem se recuse morrer
e há quem se esqueça de viver
e assim entre todos se consegue
o que era um impossível
que todo o mundo saiba
que o sul também existe.
